Check these 3 items

Track - Must be clean and free of rust, all connections must be smooth and secure.
Clean with a soft cloth. Track cleaning fluid helps with stubborn dirt.
Never use steel wool.

Transformer - Check all connections at the transformer and the wires where they connect to the track. Make sure wires are NOT touching each other. Avoid plugging in any transformer where the power cord appears dried and brittle.

Engine - Engine wheels and pick up must be clean. Check to be sure any switches on the engine are in the correct position.
